Family Johann Peter Hahn

My grandmother was born in Arenberg und my grandfather in Weitersburg. Both towns are in the proximity of Koblenz. My grandmother owned house and property in Arenberg and my grandfather, who inherited some land in Weitersburg, moved in with her after they got married.

The photo of my grandparents was taken when they got married on February 27, 1919. My grandmother was seated because she was a bit taller than my grandfather.

My grandparents had 10 children of whom one died within one year and a son who was killed in action during WWII. When my grandparents moved to Silesia in 1937, they had 9 children. Oneself can imagine that it wasn’t easy to feed such a large family and to endure the loss they encountered due to the war.

The photo of my mother and oldest sister was taken in 1950. At that time she was married to my father and lived in Arenberg again. My mother had met my father in Paris after a short stay in Paris where she had found employment after the war in 1948/1949. My father had been a prisonner of war in France and after his release he stayed in France for a while because he liked living and working there.

The picture of my great-grandfather’s family Johann Peter Hahn was taken at the wedding of his daughter Margarete Hahn. This branch of my family comes from Weitersburg.

The picture of my aunt Margarete was taken in January 1944 in Oels in Silesia. She was 22 years old and she worked for the Red Cross as a nurse. In her first marriage my aunt was married with a wine-grower from Bullay on the Mosel river. There he owned a vineyard and a small Gasthaus with bed & breakfast that was called “Uncle Tom’s cabin”. My parents visited my aunt quite often, and I loved to accompagny them because the vineyard had his own charme. After uncle Tom’s death my aunt remarried, sold the vineyard and moved to Kadenbach.

On the family photo aunt Margarete is in the first row the second child on the left. She has a big white bow in her hair. My grandfather stands in the last row. The picture was taken at the wedding of my grandfather’s sister in 1930.
