I have four sisters. Two are older and two are younger than me. Mariella was born in 1950, Gabriele in 1952, and I was born in 1953. My two younger sisters are late-comers; they were born in 1962 and 1964.
The picture with my cousin and older sisters was taken around 1960. Both of my sisters have a cunning smile on their face, and I assume now that they had cooked something up because I stand next to them with a somehow unhappy face.
Christiane and Julia look very content. That picture was taken at the time of Julia’s enrolment in elementary school. It must have been in 1969. Christiane received just like Julia a surprise paper bag with a lot of goodies. She wanted always the same things Julia had gotten; therefore my parents bought her a bag, too, only a bit smaller. They knew if she didn’t get one either, she would make a big fuss and a lot of tears would be shed. Therefore they rather gave in. And as you can see on the picture in return Christiane rewarded them with a smile that they wouldn’t want to miss either.
My sister Gabriele died unforeseen of stomach cancer. She became gravely sick in late summer of 1990 and died within 5 months. As a matter of fact this all seems a bit strange to me now. Since I was living here in the States and not getting accurate or detailed information, I feel like I miss out on a lot of important facts. My financial and personal situation put quite some limits on my contact to Germany at that time. I know that my sister who worked for a medical insurance company visited frequently medical doctors and underwent all preventive medical examinations; therefore it appears to me now that her sudden illness is not of the ordinary. I know from my own experiences that not always the appropriate care had been given when told so and crude errors were made or negligent work was common practice.
